With autumn just around the corner, I’ve found myself drawn to small projects with a slightly nostalgic, woodland feel.
This simple bunting is made using our Woodland Mini Vintage Art Fabric Prints, paired with faded vintage fabrics and a little hand stitching.
I love the mix of old cloth, frayed edges and tiny works of art — each flag feels slightly different, which is part of the charm.
Here’s how to make your own.
What You’ll Need
Mini Vintage Art Fabric Prints — I’ve used our Woodland set
A selection of vintage fabrics of your choice — for the flags with the mini prints I’ve used antique French ticking for the front and Toile de Jouy for the back. I've also used antique French brocade for the odd flag here and there.
Scissors
Fabric glue
Needle
Sewing thread
Fine embroidery thread in a contrasting colour
Ribbon or bias binding
Sewing machine (optional)
Step 1
Cut your front and back pieces of vintage fabric to approximately 10 x 15 cm (4 x 6 inches).
Make as many as you would like for the length of bunting you have in mind.
Step 2
Cut out your Mini Vintage Art Fabric Prints.
Trim a soft swallowtail shape into the bottom edge of each print.
Step 3
Place the front and back vintage fabric pieces wrong sides together.
Secure them with just a few small dots of fabric glue — you only need enough to hold the layers in place while you stitch.
Step 4
Cut a gentle swallowtail shape into the bottom edge of each fabric flag.
Lightly fray the raw edges, then hand stitch a simple row of running stitch along the two long sides and around the swallowtail edge using a contrasting embroidery thread.
Don’t worry about making the stitches too perfect — a slightly irregular finish suits the vintage fabrics beautifully.
Step 5
Hand stitch around the edge of each Mini Print with running stitch, then attach it to the centre of the flag with a little fabric glue.
Machine stitch or hand stitch each finished flag onto a length of ribbon or bias binding, spacing them approximately 2.5 cm (1 inch) apart.
Leave a little extra ribbon at each end for hanging or tying.
Step 6
Hang and enjoy.
I love this bunting draped across a shelf, mantel or wall, where the little woodland scenes can be enjoyed up close.
You could make a short length with just a few favourite prints, or keep adding flags until you have a wonderfully long, mismatched collection of woodland scenes and old fabrics.
